Lone Elk County Park

We found ourselves quarantined and we were itching to get out of the house, so we decided to go check out Lone Elk County Park. It’s a pretty neat place! Took us about 20 minutes to drive through the park and we got to see both elk and bison.

Lone Elk County Park has over 500 acres that are fenced in where elk and bison roam. A sign at the entrance warns you to not approach the animals and says that motorcycles and any domestic animals in your car are prohibited. Leave the dog at home for this trip.

We saw the first elk right when we got in the park. Along with the animals there are some really pretty viewpoints. This spot looked over a pond, there were parking spaces available if you wanted to pull over and look around.

After seeing the first elk and continuing along the road we encountered a line of traffic. After waiting about 5 minutes we discovered that people were stopping to look at a group of elk right by the road.

At this point we saw a group of about 8 elk grazing. The animals really pay no attention to the cars, it’s pretty cool to watch them.

After that you come to an area where the bison are. Signs warn you to not get out of your car and that bison may cause damage to your car. It says to proceed at your own risk, so we did. There were several bison on the left hand side and then this guy was right by the road.

This park is pretty cool to check out and definitely a great activity if it is cold out or you are in quarantine. The St. Louis County parks website says that they feed the animals every morning around 8am so that is a good time to visit.
